Online Courses for Academic Leaders

Beginning January 25

Building Trust With Faculty: Critical Skills for Challenging Times
Course Dates: January 25 - February 5, 2021 (access through February 12, 2020)

The relationship between faculty and school administrators has eroded in the COVID-19 pandemic -- at best, lines of communication have gotten crossed; at worst, there can be mistrust. Everyone is under pressure in all facets of their lives.

How can leaders and teachers get back to their shared values?  In this course, academic leaders learn how to better support teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic of racial injustice. Participants will learn how to lead affirming coaching conversations that foster healthy, trusting relationships, so that the resulting professional culture provides support for faculty members that mirrors the schools’ concern for and support of students.

Hiring During a Pandemic
Course Dates: February 1 - 7, 2021 (access through February 12, 2021)

In 2021, hiring new teachers will be different -- the process may be fully online (not just an initial Zoom interview). Bringing candidates on campus will be limited or curtailed, so academic leaders need to develop new ways to recruit and evaluate candidates. This course will help deans of faculty, division heads, and department chairs to: 1) craft a new process grounded in the school’s mission and values that defines the objectives of the hire; 2) recruit faculty members successfully from a distance; and 3) evaluate candidates fully online, to the extent necessary.

Faculty Observation & Feedback: It's Different This Year offered in partnership with our friends at the Folio Collaborative
Course Dates: February 1 - 7, 2021 (access through February 12 2021)

In 2020–21, it’s critically important to build cultures and systems that promote authentic collaboration and growth, allow for healthy exchange of feedback, and support meaningful conversation about classroom observation and best practices. Schools’ shift to remote and hybrid learning modes -- and the nature of working in socially-distanced school communities -- has complicated the practice of classroom observation. In these unfamiliar classroom contexts, educators are evolving  the skills and competencies for delivering effective teaching and offering meaningful feedback.

This course will guide participants in developing practices that work in multiple modes (on-campus, hybrid, and online) and for complex situations, ultimately helping participants plan for a more mission- and values-aligned approach to observation.

Arts Department Leadership During a Pandemic
Course Dates: February 8 - 14, 2021 (access through February 19, 2021)

Learning is not the same this year. As we now know, all of us (students and adults) are not capable of processing the same amount of information during a pandemic as during a normal school year. Academic leaders and teachers shouldn’t cross their fingers and hope to “cover it all” this year, or give the same assessments we would in a typical year. We should have a plan.

So, what are the essentials this year? What won’t be covered? Without a plan, the gaps in learning will be sporadic; learning will be disjointed, and next year will bring a host of new challenges. When the curriculum is adjusted with a plan, led by the department chair and academic leaders, wise decisions about what is essential can be made -- including a plan to adjust some competencies and objectives in future years.

In this class, participants will work with an experienced independent school arts department chair who is also an experienced teacher for One Schoolhouse to build an Action Plan for an arts department.
