"This course has been incredible. It inspired me to minor in psychology in college, and has helped me to see so many connections to real-world ideas and concepts. The course is so organized, and my teacher is so flexible with time management, as my schedule has been very crazy this year. If I could do high school all over again, I would most definitely take more courses with One Schoolhouse!" - A Student in AP Psychology |
Learning Online Builds Essential Skills For College
Julia at Boston University took Neuroscience
“There’s so much correlation between the course I took in Neuroscience and going to college, and it’s strengthened my academic abilities,” says Julia, a Mount Saint Mary’s graduate and now a pre-med freshman at Boston University. After taking Psychology in her junior year of high school, she wanted to learn more, so she enrolled in One Schoolhouse’s Neuroscience course. “It reinforced that I want to do something in the medical field of neurology. I love neuroscience,” Julia says. “I also loved that it was a class I could take in high school that wasn’t offered [at my school].”Taking a course online, she adds, prepared her for the independence she needed in college: “I realized early on that if I get it done a little quicker, instead of the day right before it’s due, I’ll have so much more success in the class, and I brought that to B.U.” |
Online Classes Create Flexibility In Your Schedule
Katie from Miss Porter’s School took AP US Government & Politics and AP Comparative Government & Politics, AP Latin, and AP English
“My entire life since elementary school, I've been balancing,” says Katie, an elite skater and high-achieving student. This summer, she decided to devote more time to skating, traveling to Dallas to train intensively. “It was an incredible experience... I never had the opportunity to test out what that lifestyle would be like. Doing the One Schoolhouse courses and having that flexibility gave me the opportunity to try that out.” By taking three courses with One Schoolhouse while she was away from school, Katie says, “I found classes I was really interested in and passionate about.” Her AP Comparative Government class inspired her to take an international relations course at Miss Porter’s after she returned to campus. Now that she’s back to a more typical school experience, would she take another online course? Absolutely, says Katie. “You can learn anywhere and connect with people around the world--that's the future.” |
Challenging Courses Not Offered At Your School
Jaelen from Heathwood Hall took Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations
When Jaelen completed BC Calculus in his junior year, he knew he wanted to continue studying math, even though he had completed all the courses his school offered. Moving to an online class, he discovered, shared a lot in common with his face-to-face classes: “ I feel like I actually go to class.” In Multivariable Calculus, “Not everything is a math problems where you have to solve for x.” Instead, Jaelen’s learned new ways to think about logic and problem solving, and he’s found success through building relationships with his teacher and classmates. “You have to get to know your teacher and your classmates to succeed to the best of your ability. It’s more connected than you actually think you’ll be in an online class.” Moving beyond the standard high school math curriculum, Jaelen sees his course as one of the first steps to reaching his goal of being an orthopedic surgeon. When you’re learning online, he says, “You have to take your time with the work and figure it out. You have to realize how important the work is.” |
Experienced Teachers
Miriam from Linden Hall took Summer Geometry
“Math is one of my favorite subjects,” says Miriam, “and I really want to reach the highest level classes.” As a ninth grader in Algebra I, however, she knew she needed to find a new way to move forward. When her teacher recommended One Schoolhouse, Miriam and her parents spent a lot of time researching the program, looking for a class that would have a strong teacher as a ready resource. Taking Geometry at One Schoolhouse “was one of the best experiences I've ever experienced. Once I had my first meeting with Ms. Boudreau, I felt so comfortable. She offered me advice, she told me to just take it one step at a time... The communication that I had with Ms. Boudreau, and the materials that she gave us, really made it comfortable and made it easy and made it understandable for us.” With an A in her summer Geometry course, Miriam jumped into Honors Algebra II for her sophomore year. Her advice to students considering an online class: “Take it one step at a time... if you really believe in yourself, you can do it.” |
I think that it is so incredible how much our brain can change over time, and how you can always make improvements on your life. When I learn in this class, I don't feel like I am just checking off a box. Every time I read something I am left with questions, and a desire to learn and explore more. I always want to try my own experiments, to better understand how things work! - Neuroscience |
