Science Department Leadership During a Pandemic

Future Dates To-Be Announced

This course is designed for any school administrator who is responsible for leading science faculty, including division heads, deans of faculty and department chairs.

Register
DESCRIPTION
Learning is not the same this year. As we now know, all of us (students and adults) are not capable of processing the same amount of information during a pandemic as during a normal school year. Academic leaders and teachers shouldn’t cross their fingers and hope to “cover it all” this year, or give the same assessments we would in a typical year. We should have a plan.

So, what are the essentials this year? What won’t be covered? Without a plan, the gaps in learning will be sporadic; learning will be disjointed, and next year will bring a host of new challenges. When the curriculum is adjusted with a plan, led by the department chair and academic leaders, wise decisions about what is essential can be made -- including a plan to adjust some competencies and objectives in future years.

In this class, participants will work with an experienced independent school science department chair who is also an experienced teacher for One Schoolhouse to build an Action Plan for a science department.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Develop a departmental plan for finishing the 2020-21 school year with academic integrity.
  • Define an instructional program that is appropriately rigorous while balanced for teachers and supportive of students.
  • Learn to assess and manage the differences between a typical year and 2020-2021.
