Social Justice and Schools
Schools and teachers must foster equal and equitable classroom conditions and practices  for all of their students. Every classroom should be a safe space for all students no matter where they are from, what they look like, or what they believe.

Webinars

How Academic Leaders Can Create Equitable Support Structures - In our November 10 Academic Leaders Webinar, Brad welcomes Rafael del Castillo of Rainier Scholars, an organization that works to increase educational access and equity among low-income students of color in the Pacific Northwest. Rafael offers a few ways that independent schools can create support structures to build equity instead of exacerbating inequality.

The Myth of the Walled Garden - At our October 20 Academic Leaders Webinar, Sarah welcomed Stacia McFadden, Chief Information Officer at The Lovett School in Atlanta, GA. At Lovett, Stacia combines her technology and education expertise to help fellow Academic Leaders center student voice when addressing challenging topics. She shared strategies she uses to engage Lovett students alongside administrators to lead healthy campus conversations.

Teach About Me, Too - At One Schoolhouse, one of the ways we're committed to ensuring that students can access a course of study that is inclusive and equitable of their unique experience, and as part of our mission to partner with schools, was creating identity-honoring spaces for BIPOC/LGBTQ+ students
Using the Data We Have - Joel Sohn has been researching how Academic Leaders can discover and leverage data a little differently, with powerful results. Watch our June 23 Academic Leaders Webinar to learn how connecting with other campus leaders helped Joel find information he could use to help advance DEIB initiatives.
Identity Course Development - Presenters Sarah and Corinne were joined by Amanda Rosas for a conversation about racial equity and identity course development. Amanda teaches Gender and Sexual Identity in the United States and the Spring Activism Seminar at One Schoolhouse, and will be teaching Latina/o/x Identity in the United States in Fall 2021.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging in Distance Learning Classrooms -  Presenter Gene Batiste discusses: the biggest DEIB challenges facing schools in the midst of COVID-19; new boundaries and expectations for learning from home; and, embedding your school's values throughout your crisis response.
At The Intersection of Policy and Practice: Hiring and Retraining Faculty of Color - As our schools explore how best to hire and support faculty of color, it is worth reflecting on the many ways our actual processes are misaligned with what our policies outline—in places like school handbooks, hiring protocol, and school mission—as well as what we theoretically hope to achieve. This conversation does not offer any distinct answers, but it provides listeners with a platform to reflect on their schools’ current practices, a venue to share out best practices, and the opportunity to ask meaningful questions to an educator who has chosen to dedicate his life to this work. This webinar is presented by Dr. Travis Bristol of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California at Berkeley.
