Wellness and Balance
It is essential that schools acknowledge, face, and work to address the many sources of unhealthy and even dangerous stress and anxiety that disrupt and unbalance students', and teachers',  lives.

Webinars

Wellness for Campus Adults - Wellness programs for faculty and staff took on a higher level of importance in 2020 and 2021. Presenters Sarah and Liz were joined by Leslee Frye, M.S., Ed.S., Upper School Psychologist at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Abnormal Psychology teacher at One Schoolhouse, to talk about the school-wide Wellness Task Force at SCH. Leslee shared what worked (and what didn't) in building a plan to support the wellness of campus adults.
Protecting Student Mental Health - The statistics on student mental health are starting to become alarming. While many kids are doing "okay" this year, many others are not. How can academic leaders develop systems to discern who needs intervention? Presenter Liz Katz discussed effective strategies for online student support.
Course Standards & Teacher Competencies for Hybrid Courses - In this webinar, we focused on the Course Standards and Teacher Competencies for Hybrid Courses that we released in the prior week. Corinne Dedini, our Assistant Head, talked about why standards are important to have, and the design/background of the standards.
Student Support in Online Learning - In this Academic Leaders Webinar, we looked at how we can support students, including those with learning differences, when some or all of school is delivered online. Liz Katz, Assistant Head of School for School Partnerships, and Mark Cortez, Director of Student Support, joined to share their insights on this topic.
On Gratitude - Presenters Sarah and Peter were joined by Rebecca Plona, long-time AP Psychology teacher for One Schoolhouse and current teacher of Happiness: The Psychology of What Makes Life Worth Living. Rebecca shared her insights on gratitude and thriving from her work in schools and with adults.
Meeting the Moment - Academic Leaders presented on what mission-driven and care-given conversations you should be having right now to be prepared to make critical decisions down the road for your students and community.
Resilience - Presenters Sarah Hanawald and Liz Katz talked through what Academic Leaders can do to help restore community, wellness, and trust among educators in their schools.
Teach, Coach, Live: The Viability of the Triple Threat Teaching Model in the 21st Century - Veteran “triple-threat” boarding school educator Greg Martin of Perkiomen School (PA) shares lessons from his doctoral dissertation study of the teacher-coach-dorm parent employment model. Even day schools often ask teachers to perform expertly in multiple roles, but how durable is this conception of “teaching” in a changing economy? The results of this study can be applied to hiring practices in all schools, boarding AND day, in order to create a staffing model that is both good for the students and sustainable for the school.
A Values-Based Learning Culture - Research on our student populations increasingly shows alarming risk factors, both in terms of externalizing (substance abuse, delinquency) and internalizing (anxiety, depression) behaviors. The very latest research, however, shows that increased school engagement, particularly emotional engagement, correlates with decreased levels of these behaviors. How, then, do we shape our community in a way that promotes student well-being? In this hour, we'll propose a model for the value-based learning community, including the component factors to building a school community that promote student engagement and can result in optimal academic and personal outcomes. Presented by Brad Philipson of Fort Worth Country Day.
