AP® Cybersecurity
All-genders; Full-year
Prerequisite: None; however, foundational understanding of computer systems is recommended
Course Overview
AP® Cybersecurity is an introductory college-level course designed for students interested in pursuing careers in information technology, cybersecurity, or related fields. The goal of the course is to develop an understanding of how individuals and organizations identify, assess, and mitigate cybersecurity risks in an increasingly digital world. Students explore common threats and vulnerabilities across multiple domains, including physical spaces, computer networks, individual devices, and data and applications. Emphasis is placed on defense-in-depth strategies, risk management frameworks, and the professional skills outlined in the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education Workforce Framework. Throughout the year, students engage with course content through hands-on laboratory investigations, real-world case studies, and career-connected scenarios that mirror authentic cybersecurity challenges. By the end of this course, students will be able to determine, evaluate, and recommend comprehensive security mitigations; analyze cybersecurity artifacts and evidence; and consider the impact of cybersecurity decisions on individuals, organizations, and society. This course prepares students for the AP® Cybersecurity exam in the spring and provides the opportunity to earn an employer-endorsed credential that aligns with industry certifications.
“When I took this course, which is not offered at my school, I fell in love with it and decided to major in it in college. It is nice to have an avenue to explore something I’m interested in that I would not have been able to before.”
