OUR APPROACH

One Schoolhouse courses are intentionally designed with best-practice research guiding the way.

Every course starts from the skills and understanding we want students to carry forward, and works backward from there. The result is a program that produces resilient, self-directed, and adaptable learners — students who leave us knowing how to learn, not just what they learned.

PEDAGOGY STATEMENT

One Schoolhouse pedagogy

We use our pedagogy statement to guide course and lesson development and support teachers and students in understanding our common vision and beliefs on how students learn and teachers instruct. Read the full One Schoolhouse educational pedagogy statement.

What Do We Want Students to Know and Do?

Our course design begins with the end goal: the transferable skills and understanding we want students to carry forward. From there, we work backward to build a curriculum that gets them there, ensuring student learning remains at the center of every design choice. In addition to course-specific goals, teachers stress two core competencies in every course. One Schoolhouse students will:

DEVELOP ACADEMIC MATURITY

Take responsibility for their own learning, demonstrate flexibility and adaptability, learn collaboratively, practice intellectual curiosity, and employ executive functioning skills.

ENGAGE CONSTRUCTIVELY

Practice empathy, work collaboratively, respectfully engage in disagreements, encounter people and ideas that are different from their own, and demonstrate mastery through real-world application.

COURSE-SPECIFIC EXAMPLES

  • AP Calculus BC: “Students use their understanding of definitions and theorems to develop and implement strategies to solve problems and communicate their solution using proper mathematical notation and concise justifications.”

  • Neuroscience: “Students utilize case studies to understand specific neurological diseases and disorders: Students will follow the doctrine of ethical analysis with patients and utilize guidelines associated with a first-year resident outlined by the American Academy of Neurology to become competent in one or more neurological diseases.”

  • AP Cybersecurity: “Students develop and deploy a multi-layered security architecture.”

What Do We Want Students to Learn?

We build our courses to empower active learning, ensuring students authentically engage rather than passively consume. Our pedagogy is grounded in proven educational research to maximize student mastery.
