AP® Physics C - Electricity and Magnetism

All-genders; Full-year

Prerequisite: Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Calculus; successful completion of a high school physics course is recommended

Course Overview

AP® Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism is a calculus-based, college-level physics course designed for students planning to specialize or major in one of the physical sciences or engineering. The goal of the course is to develop a comprehensive understanding of electricity and magnetism through inquiry-based investigations that integrate calculus as a fundamental analytical tool. Students explore electrostatics; conductors, capacitors, and dielectrics; electric circuits; magnetic fields; and electromagnetic induction. Throughout the course, students work primarily asynchronously through interactive digital content, simulations, and virtual laboratory experiences, with periodic synchronous sessions for collaborative problem-solving and instructor check-ins. Developing the ability to apply calculus to electromagnetic phenomena is a principal focus, with skills developed through mathematical derivations and quantitative analysis. Students develop an inquiry-based approach to learning and a methodical approach to problem solving using differential and integral calculus. This course is often taken after or concurrently with AP® Physics C: Mechanics and is intended to prepare students for the AP® Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism exam in May.

“It’s noticing the way things work beneath your own nose. Seeing things from a different perspective is really great. You can see there are multiple ways of doing things, and instead of just picking one, you can take a little bit from each way. I think it’s definitely helped me and I’m really glad I got to do it.
